Microsoft gives three days a week off in Japan, increased productivity by 40%
Microsoft Japan
gave 2300 employees leave for three days instead of two days a week. These
employees were made to work only four days a week.
Microsoft has taken a unique initiative for employees in its
unit in Japan. The company organized the Work-Life Choice Challenge Summer 2019
in Japan for a month.
This program,
named 'Working Reform Project', was carried out experimentally for a month. In
this, Microsoft Japan gave 2300 employees leave for three days instead of two
days a week. These employees were made to work only four days a week
The employees did not have to compromise in any way with the
rest of their holidays in exchange for three days a week holiday. The impact of
Microsoft's move was very encouraging. Productivity of the company increased by
39.9 percent by giving three days' leave.
Not only this, the employees took less holidays during this
period and the company consumed 23.1 percent less electricity. This also
reduced the company's expenses.
This increase in Microsoft's productivity was attributed to a decrease in meeting times. Due to work only four days a week, meetings started to end soon inside the company. Many meetings went virtual rather than face to face. Decisions began to be taken quickly. This increased work and increased productivity. After the end of the month, when Microsoft got to know their opinion from their employees, 92.1 percent declared the four-day week as an excellent idea.
Given the success of this experiment, Microsoft is planning to implement it again. A four-day week can be tried like this time in the next summer or in other months of the year along with it.
